75 Th Anniversary

Diamant Boart has made its reputation worldwide with the high degree of innovation and quality of its products, in an advanced industrial activity that features an impressive array of high technologies in rock and oil drilling, glass and mechanics, stone and construction.

The Diamant Boart S.A. was created in Brussels exactly 75 years ago

Until it became part of Husqvarna AB, Diamant Boart S.A. was a Belgian international group active in the production and distribution of diamond tools and machines for the natural stone and construction industry.

The group has been established at Avenue du Pont de Luttre in Forest since 1937.
A leader in its field, the Diamant Boart Group developed production sites in Spain, Portugal, Greece, Italy, France, the United States, Australia and China.

The sales and service network of Diamant Boart covered already the entire world through direct subsidiaries in the main markets in Western Europe, North America, China and Australia, and through agents in the rest of the world.

In June 2002, Diamant Boart was acquired by the Electrolux Group (Sweden) and together with Dimas, Partner and Target, constituted the Electrolux Construction Products division.

In 2006, the Electrolux Group was split into two entities, Electrolux and Husqvarna, each of which is quoted on the Stockholm stock exchange.

Husqvarna Construction Products, which comprises Diamant Boart, employs 2,200 people throughout the world, generates a turnover of €350 million, and has 10 production centres. The Belgian site has a workforce of 150.

In August 2005, the company left the historic site of Forest and moved to Ath.
The site henceforth hosts the world headquarters of Diamant Boart with the general management, research and development activities, product management, marketing, production techniques, plus two production lines for the stone industry. The site is also home to the diamond tools line for construction.

Nature of the industrial activity
Diamant Boart was established in 1937 and originally made tools and equipment for industrial use, using a low quality diamond extracted from diamond mines in the Congo. Synthetic industrial diamonds, developed in the 1960s, gradually replaced natural diamonds: they now represent 95% of the world’s consumption of industrial diamonds.

Diamant Boart has made its reputation worldwide with the high degree of innovation and quality of its products, in an advanced industrial activity that features an impressive array of high technologies in rock and oil drilling, glass and mechanics, stone and construction.

Powder metallurgy, born just after the Second World War, rapidly became the nerve centre of the company. And the sustained development of metal powders and implementing techniques in the world of metallurgy and mechanics has contributed extensively to the group’s solid position in its own line of business.

Diamant Boart has constantly given preference to the development of internal expertise capable of coming up with proprietary designs that always outperformed techniques available on the market.
This strategy proved systematically efficient in all the sectors of the market and in all aspects of the product, whether for natural stone or building materials, in the use of raw materials, the characterisation and choice of diamond, production of steel tool supports, tool making processes or innovation in terms of the use of tools.

Accordingly, Diamant Boart was:
- behind the development of Cobalt powders;
- the first to offer an industrial solution for diamond grain coating;
- one of the first producers of synthetic diamonds;
- a pioneer in the use of granulation, mechanical pre-formation and high-pressure fritting techniques;
- a precursor in micro fusion laser welding;
- the inventor of the cast aluminium alloy disc;

And in terms of applications:
- the inventor of the alternative gang saw blade for marble
- the inventor of the diamond wire for sawing stone and reinforced concrete;
- the inventor of the chain-saw cutting of hard marble;
- one of the first to offer a technique for dismantling entirely metal structures in hostile environments such as the nuclear industry and off-shore;
- One of the pioneers in the production of wires for multiwire machines for granite

Today, true to its proud past, Diamant Boart is the leading brand for the development, production and marketing of a complete range of tools for the stone industry.

Four plants produce or assemble diamond tools:
Ath (Belgium): Headquarter and segments and beads production
Rio de Mouro (Portugal): wires, discs and gang saw blades assembling
Lonato (Italy): assembling of gang saw blades for Northern Europe
Hebei (China): production of discs and finishing tools

The sales network, in addition to Europe where the main countries are served by subsidiaries, extends chiefly to the United States, Canada, Brazil, China, India and South Africa. The other countries are covered by agents or distributors.

550 employees and 120 sales representatives handle production, sales, service, and management through subsidiaries and agents.

The history of Diamant Boart has far from run its course, as the company is entering the 21st century with determination and a power for innovation intact -- the recent launch of the wires for multiwire machines being but one example.
